Kieran Crowder

My project is unambiguous about painting as a medium of unique power, difficult and rich, and the best I have discovered for the encounter with the viewer so that they may be engaged at the most passionate level. Thus the trademark structure: paintings as obessional objects, ritually given up to unconscious drives and the delirium of materiality and colour. Each one attempts to manifest beauty as presence, at once compulsive and physical- indeed, compulsive because physical- which is perhaps why people instinctively want to touch them. This gesture completes the work of art.

This work takes as its major theme our human nature: particularly our secret relations to the (our) self. Composed of paintings, photographs and texts written for live performance, much of my output has been informally brought together under the project title HERE LIES. Presentation of this project is by an unusual kind of installation I have dubbed the event-form: an aesthetic environment where fantasies of community cannot be sustained and the corporeal individual is addressed directly. My other work, including the well-known heads/faces, is made to support this ongoing project, and subtly extend its reach.
